Getting Starting
Great custom design begins as a conversation…
It is not always easy for people to describe what they want, but where cabinetry and furniture are concerned…  we speak the language. We start by listening very carefully.  We’ve been evolving the design conversation for as long as we’ve been practicing cabinetmaking.  We’ll be building our understanding not only of how the project should look, but how the design can best serve the way you and your household live.<

Whether you need one piece of furniture, or entire rooms of cabinetry and millwork, we will start by finding the best time and place for you to tell us about it.  A phone call or an email from you gets the ball rolling, and we take it from there.

We will want to get to know the house so we can contribute the most appropriate designs for the rooms it holds. For work in an existing home, we’ll likely suggest meeting on site, where we can see the spaces, and feel the overall style.  We’ll be brainstorming and talking about how the rooms will be used every day.

For new construction, we are often invited to meet where the architect, builder, or interior decorator can be available.   When convenient, our office puts examples and samples close at hand, and one can catch a glimpse at how it all happens, in the shop below.

People bring or send snapshots, napkin doodles, architectural house plans, pages out of magazines, and memories.  Basic dimensions can be a helpful starting point, but are by no means necessary.  Once we have a general idea of the project, we can outline some options and offer a budgeting proposal.

From there, we move to concept drawings.  The idea is to get our creative juices flowing and move the conversation onto paper.  We develop illustrations that explore stylistic and functional options.  On large projects, which may require extensive design, we offer our conceptual illustrations for a reasonable fee, which is then credited back to the project when you decide to proceed with the fabrication.

The concept illustrations become the foundation for the final shop drawings.  These working drawings allow everyone involved to see, in detail, exactly how the finished project will look.

Great design is as emotional as it is technical.  It wells from the excitement and enthusiasm we feel about the process.  It is exhibited in the work, and shared with those who eventually live surrounded by the results.

Whether you have armloads of architectural drawings or only the vaguest notion of what you’re looking for… let’s talk… we’re ready to listen.
